Oh, it started long before that.
A lot of Jewish tradition -- including keeping kosher -- is either
explicitly or implicitly intended to keep Jews distinct. Even when you
get rid of the language about commandments, one major recurring theme is
"we are different from everyone else because we do these things."
One common modern interpretation of why the ancient Pharoah turned against
and enslaved Jacob's descendants (which later led up to the Exodus story,
Moses and all that) was that Pharoah saw that in the midst of his people
was this close-knit, different community -- a group of people more loyal
to each other and to their own God than to Pharoah and his Gods.
That kind of mistrust and hatred certainly isn't confined to Jews; we
just have more recorded history talking about it than most other groups.
