'ABC News obtained talking points circulated among Senate Republicans
explaining why they should vote to intervene in the Schiavo case. Among
them, that it is an important moral issue and the "pro-life base will
be excited," and that it is a "great political issue -- this is a tough
issue [for] Democrats."'
http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/40552 has a lot of good links, including the ABC story quoted above.
This'll all be over (as a nationwide issue) within a few weeks or maybe
months, but it still colors the ongoing morality debate in very strange
ways -- and it reveals one of the main differences between the General
Opposition Party and today's Republicans: they've gone from the generally
libertarian "keep the government out of my life" (re guns, etc) to...well,
to this insanity.
I'd expect to see prominent Republicans (or those who're up for
re-election soon) start distancing themselves about now.
