Having recently applied for a passport, I've been thinking about how
laughably insecure the national identity system is right now. I mean,
come on -- my flimsy paper social security card that I signed when I
was six years old (so the signature doesn't look anything at all like
mine now) is valid proof that I am who I say I am? It's crazy.
So, the security geek in me says that IF DONE CORRECTLY, a single national
identification method would be way better than the myriad of crappy ones
we've got now. But of course, it's unlikely that such a card will be
done correctly at the start.
