The Bushies /made/ Koran desecration a bigger story in the US (it was
apparently already big in the Arab media) when they decided to blame
Newsweek for people dying during violent demonstrations in Afghanistan --
as if the Afghans weren't pissed enough at us already.
I think the Bushies (and by this I mean the brains behind the right-wing
message, presumably Karl Rove but I really don't know) were trying to
create another "Rathergate," making Newsweek into the story and thereby
silencing anyone else who might want to report on the original issue.
They were amazingly successful; nobody's talking about Bush's military
record anymore.
But they've overreached here.
'The case that "Newsweek lied, people
died" rested in its entirety on the denial of a single Pentagon
spokesman.' (from
this story.)
Even for those of us who hate the current administration, abuse of
unconvicted prisoners (for that's what this equates to in the public's
mind) is much more reprehensible than whether George W. Bush slacked
off in the seventies.
