In May,
I wrote about my iTunes/Juice setup. It's evolved a bit since then, so I've been meaning to post an update.
I'm still using iTunes to pull down news podcasts, and Juice for "song of the day" (or week, or whatever) podcasts, exactly
as described previously. The playlists, however, have gotten more complicated.
Juice is feeding me more than a dozen new songs every week (all legal, as far as I can tell), so I've got a "New & Unplayed" playlist containing anything where the play count is 0 (with a few caveats for my particular situation.) I listen to this at home, and end up deleting about a third of it.
My old "Recently Added" playlist has been split. I realized that I wanted a bit more variety in my iPod, so I expanded the original playlist to include the most recent 15 GB, and made another which randomly condenses down to 5 GB. This latter also excludes anything in the "New & Unplayed" playlist, so that I don't end up with unlistenable crap in my iPod.
You'll also see that the larger playlist, "Recently Added (big)," excludes anything in the "complex 2" playlist. What happened is that I've added a whole lot of songs by Red Snapper and Leonard Cohen in the past few months, and there was nothing else in the playlist. To combat that, I decided to exclude any songs by either of those artists which haven't been played before. My usual habit at home is to listen to the library entirely at random, so everything gets played eventually.
To accomplish this, I had to create a playlist which contains Red Snapper OR Leonard Cohen (and I might add other artists later.) Then, I created another playlist which contains any song from the first playlist, AND the play count is 0 or 1. And finally, "Recently Added (big)" excludes any song in this second playlist.
I still have the "Old & Unplayed Recently" playlist, more or less
as described previously, so that forgotten songs appear in my iPod too -- but there's only 1 GB of those, so when I shuffle songs while driving or walking there's still a much higher chance of hearing something recent.
Previously, I described how I get music from podcasts into my ears. But I haven't yet described which music podcasts I subscribe to, or why. I started with Salon.com's Audiofile column, which they have now discontinued. With the new setup, I added Th
