I woke up randomly in the middle of the night and looked at my computer, and on icb a friend had said something about Cash's death, and I thought I could feel his ghost out there, checking in on everything before passing on to that glorious Heaven he has sung about so many times.
This morning when I actually woke up, I set iTunes on random and told it to just play his songs...another dear friend had posted about how silly it is to mourn celebrities that we never knew, and yet she still mourned him...and iTunes chose "We'll Meet Again" from his last album, "American IV." Not an original, but so apt, so touching:
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when
but I know we'll meet again some sunny day
keep smiling through, just like you always do
'till the blue skies drive the dark clouds far away
And will you please say hello
to the folks that I know
tell 'em that I won't be long
and they'll be happy to know
that as you saw me go
I was signing this song
We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when
but I know we'll meet again some sunny day
(etc)
There are artists who touch our thoughts, make us think...but then there are the ones who touch our soul, and even those where you realize they were already part of our souls, always there.
Johnny Cash is one of those.
